Islam Makhachev, UFC lightweight champion, wants to make a statement in his first defense by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284.

Makhachev won the then-vacant championship with a submission victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in October.

Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, and Makhachev agreed to a champion versus champion fight, which was scheduled to headline UFC 284 in Perth, Australia in February.

Volkanovski recognizes Makhachev as his toughest challenge yet, due to his Dagestani wrestling.

However, Makhachev warns Volkanovski to also be mindful of his striking abilities. In an interview with ESPN Deportes, Makhachev stated, "Honestly, I want to knock him out.

Everybody says Islam is a grappler or wrestler, but I want to show people my striking. He is a short guy, and I really believe I can knock him out."

Makhachev also commented that Volkanovski is not familiar with his level of power and that this is not his area.

If Makhachev were to defeat Volkanovski by KO, he would become only the second fighter to do so, following Corey Nelson.

The much-anticipated fight will take place on Saturday, February 11th at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
