The Dallas Mavericks have acquired Kyrie Irving in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, ending the Lakers' pursuit of the point guard.

The Nets received Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round pick, and second-rounders in exchange for Irving.

The Mavericks were one of several teams, including the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and the Los Angeles Clippers, who showed interest in Irving.

However, it was the Mavericks who met the Nets' asking price for the trade. The Lakers lacked the necessary cap space and assets to match the Mavericks' offer, which included currently impactful players.

As a result, the Lakers fell out of contention and will now focus on trading Russell Westbrook.

The pursuit of Irving could resume in free agency, but it will be more challenging.
