Jack Diamond, a 23-year-old winger for Sunderland football club, has been charged with rape and sexual assault, resulting in his suspension by the club.

Diamond, who came up through the Sunderland academy, has also had his season-long loan at Lincoln City terminated with immediate effect. The charges relate to an incident that occurred in the Washington area in May of last year.

The Northumbria Police launched an investigation, which resulted in Diamond's arrest. He has since been charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Diamond has made 45 appearances for Sunderland, including playing as a substitute in their 2021 Papa John's Trophy win at Wembley.

In response to the charges, the club has suspended him with immediate effect pending the outcome of the judicial process.

Additionally, his loan agreement with Lincoln City has been terminated. The winger had scored eight goals in 36 matches for League One Lincoln this season.

A spokesperson for Diamond has stated that he denies the allegations made against him and is looking forward to clearing his name in court.

Sunderland AFC has released a statement acknowledging the charges brought against the player by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The club has also expressed its commitment to fully cooperating with the authorities and supporting the legal process in any way it can.

Diamond's suspension and termination of his loan spell have dealt a blow to both Sunderland and Lincoln City, as he was an important player for both clubs.

However, the priority in this case is to allow the legal process to take its course and ensure that justice is served.
