Grizzlies' Ja Morant Files Countersuit Against High School Player For Alleged Slander And Assault
Ja Morant, a basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies, has filed a countersuit against Josh Holloway, a high school basketball player, following an incident that occurred during a pickup game at Morant's house in July of last year.
In the court filings, Morant alleges that Holloway intentionally threw a basketball at his face, walked aggressively towards him with his fists clenched, and threatened him.
Morant also claims that Holloway lied to police about Morant flashing a gun and violated a court order by leaking details of a sealed case to the media.
Morant asserts that Holloway's actions have caused him personal humiliation, impairment of character and reputation, and financial losses by hurting his chances of making an All-NBA team.
The incident has made him more circumspect when dealing with the media. A week ago, Holloway spoke to the Washington Post about the incident, claiming that Morant attacked him after he checked the ball to him, and it slipped through Morant's hands and hit him in the chin.
Holloway's mother previously filed a lawsuit against Morant and Davonte Pack, Morant's friend, on behalf of her son, alleging that they repeatedly punched him in the head and face, even after he fell to the ground.
However, the case was shelved by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office due to a lack of evidence.
Morant and Pack's lawyers have characterized the suit as a "shakedown" and referenced since-dismissed lawsuits that Holloway's mother filed against a school district and a fire department, according to the Post.
In the countersuit, Morant claims that he hit Holloway only once in self-defense and is the victim of slander, battery, and assault.
Despite this, Holloway maintains that Morant and Pack have not taken responsibility for their actions and continues to pursue the case.
