French Phenom Victor Wembanyama Throws First Pitch at Yankees Game, Sets Sights On NBA Draft

Victor Wembanyama, known for his impressive 8-foot wingspan, recently took to the baseball diamond to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a New York Yankees game.

However, the result was far from perfect, indicating that basketball was indeed the right career choice for him. As he awaits the 2023 NBA Draft, where he is expected to be selected as the San Antonio Spurs' top pick, Wembanyama showcased his pitching skills, or lack thereof, to the crowd.

When the moment arrived, Wembanyama's pitch missed the mark, veering outside and into the dirt. Despite this minor mishap, the 19-year-old athlete has had a remarkable career, averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game for Metropolitans 92 in France’s LNB Pro A league last season.

Regarded as one of the most promising prospects since LeBron James, Wembanyama has earned the moniker of a "unicorn" from James himself. With his towering 7-foot-4 frame, the sight of Wembanyama on the pitcher's mound with a regular-sized baseball in hand was quite a spectacle.

It begs the question of why the team didn't provide him with a larger ball to match his physical attributes. All jokes aside, Wembanyama's future with the San Antonio Spurs appears almost certain, as he let slip to French media that it's where he would likely play.

The dedication of Spurs fans was evident as one admirer had Wembanyama's portrait shaved into the back of his head in anticipation of the player joining the team. While San Antonio may be his expected destination, Wembanyama's popularity extends far beyond Texas.

Upon his arrival in New York, he was greeted by an enthusiastic mob of fans, eagerly seeking autographs and photos. As Wembanyama marveled at the impact he has on people, he acknowledged the excitement surrounding his journey.

However, this is only the beginning of what promises to be a whirlwind basketball career for the young phenom. Following the NBA Draft, he will head to San Antonio, or possibly elsewhere, for his introduction to the city and his participation in the NBA Con event in Las Vegas.

He also plans to join Team France in August for the FIBA World Cup before embarking on NBA training camp and preseason games.
