Inter Miami Parts Ways With Player After Messi Doubts; Beckham Takes Bold Contract Termination Step

Inter Miami CF has recently made a surprising move by terminating the contract of their player Nick Marsman.

This decision comes just weeks after Marsman publicly expressed doubts about the club's preparedness for the potential signing of Lionel Messi. The departure of Marsman was made possible due to Major League Soccer's (MLS) rule allowing clubs to buy out one player's contract during the season.

David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, utilized this option to dissolve Marsman's contract, a decision that could provide the team with more roster flexibility and financial savings. The club officially exercised its Salary Budget Charge buyout on goalkeeper Marsman's MLS contract on Saturday, August 5.

Since joining Inter Miami from Feyenoord in July 2021, the 32-year-old Marsman participated in 29 games, conceding 49 goals, recording six clean sheets, and making 88 saves across the 2021 and 2022 MLS regular seasons. Marsman had drawn attention earlier in the summer when he questioned the club's readiness for Lionel Messi's arrival.

Citing concerns about the temporary stadium, lack of security, and open pitch access, he stated that Inter Miami wasn't adequately prepared for such a high-profile addition. By parting ways with Marsman, Inter Miami is poised to free up resources for future player acquisitions.

There are speculations of a potential reunion between Messi and Luis Suarez, as Suarez recently announced his departure from Brazilian club Gremio in December. Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami, has already proven his worth by becoming the top goal-scorer for the club in 2023.

In just four matches, he has netted seven goals, including a 94th-minute debut winner against Cruz Azul and back-to-back braces against Atlanta United and Orlando City. Moreover, Messi's swift goal-scoring prowess has propelled him into the club's all-time top five goal scorers list.

He now trails only Gonzalo Higuain, Leo Campana, and Robert Taylor in terms of total goals scored for Inter Miami. Although Josef Martinez, Lewis Morgan, and Rodolfo Pizarro have also scored seven goals each, they have accumulated more playing time for the club compared to Messi, who has made an impressive impact in a short span.
