Joel Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP and star of the Philadelphia 76ers, has officially committed to representing Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking his Olympic debut.
This significant decision was conveyed to Team USA executive director Grant Hill after a meeting between the two. Embiid himself confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), a few hours later.
Grant Hill traveled to Fort Collins to meet with Embiid, who was participating in a training camp with fellow 76ers player James Harden.
The 7-footer Embiid, who possesses dual citizenship in France and the U.S. due to being born in Cameroon, had a choice to make, setting the stage for a recruiting battle.
France had even given him a deadline of October 10th to make his commitment, but it seems he made up his mind before that. Cameroon, though an option, appeared to be less likely as Embiid expressed his desire to represent Team USA at media day.
Many prominent NBA players, including Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant, have also expressed their interest in joining Team USA for the Olympics, signaling a strong desire to reassert America's dominance on the global basketball stage.

Embiid's decision is fueled by his aspiration to win a gold medal in front of his three-year-old son, Arthur, who holds U.S. citizenship.
This collective enthusiasm from NBA stars to participate in the Olympics follows Team USA's recent failure to secure a medal at the FIBA World Cup, making the quest for gold in Paris even more significant.
