Marlins' ace pitcher Sandy  Alcántara delivered somber news on Friday as he revealed that he had undergone Tommy John Surgery, effectively sidelining him for the entirety of the 2024 season.

Expressing his heartfelt sentiments, Alcántara expressed deep regret for his devoted Marlins fans who had been unwavering in their support throughout the year, particularly during the exhilarating playoff pursuit.

The talented pitcher, who clinched the NL Cy Young Award in 2022 with a remarkable 2.28 ERA over a league-leading 228.2 innings, faced challenges in the 2023 season with a less impressive 4.14 ERA in 184.2 innings pitched, marking his highest ERA since his debut in 2017.

Throughout his career, Alcántara has solidified his reputation as an innings workhorse, consistently outperforming his peers since 2021. The turning point occurred on September 3 when Alcántara found himself placed on the injured list due to a diagnosed sprained UCL.

His return efforts were marred by a forearm tightness during a Triple-A rehab start, effectively ending his 2023 season prematurely. Despite the setback, the seasoned veteran affirmed his commitment to the Marlins, pledging unwavering support as he embarks on an arduous journey of rehabilitation.

Alcántara declared, "I give this game my all, I give this city my all, and so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back and better than ever."

In the face of this challenging ordeal, Marlins fans and baseball enthusiasts alike will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipating Alcántara's triumphant return to the mound in the future, hoping for a comeback that matches his remarkable career achievements.
