NBA Enforces Tattoo Cover-Up Policy On Hornets' LaMelo Ball Due To Rule Violation

In a recent development, Charlotte Hornets' standout LaMelo Ball faces the NBA's directive to cover up his tattoo featuring the initials "LF."

The league asserts that the tattoo violates the collective bargaining agreement, which prohibits the display of commercial logos or corporate insignia on players' bodies during games.

The initials "LF" hold personal significance for Ball, representing his middle name "LaFrance," his uncle's name, and the moniker of his clothing brand. Despite the sentimental value, the NBA maintains its stance, emphasizing the need to enforce rules consistently.

NBA spokesperson Tim Frank stated, "We try to enforce the rule reasonably, in accordance with its purpose, and taking into account players' efforts to express themselves in a non-commercial manner. But LaMelo Ball's neck tattoo is in obvious violation of the rule and, accordingly, he's required to cover it."

Discussions between Ball and the NBA have been ongoing for several weeks, leading to the player's decision to cover the tattoo on Tuesday to avoid potential fines. ESPN reports that this action is expected to be repeated on Friday night.

The situation echoes a previous incident involving Ball's older brother, Lonzo, who was compelled to conceal the "Big Baller Brand" logo tattooed on him during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018.

As the issue remains unresolved officially, both parties are engaged in ongoing discussions to find both short- and long-term resolutions. Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball continues to showcase his on-court prowess, averaging 22.2 points and 8.6 assists in the current NBA season, following his lucrative five-year contract extension signed during the offseason.
