In a surprising move, the Los Angeles Rams are set to sign quarterback Carson Wentz, pending a physical examination, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
The news was initially reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. This acquisition comes after Rams' starting quarterback Matthew Stafford missed Week 9 due to a thumb injury, and backup Brett Rypien's performance was lackluster, leading to his release by the team.
Although head coach Sean McVay expressed optimism about Stafford's return after the Week 10 bye, the addition of Carson Wentz will bolster the Rams' quarterback depth.
Wentz, the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has faced numerous challenges in recent seasons. He struggled during his time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, marked by turnovers and inefficient play.
His tenure with the Washington Commanders in the previous season also ended on a disappointing note. Despite his recent struggles, Wentz has been working to revamp his game in the offseason, including under the guidance of Jon Gruden, who is a former mentor to Rams' coach Sean McVay.
While Wentz's performance in recent years has raised questions, the Rams are hoping for a resurgence akin to what they achieved with Baker Mayfield in the previous season. If Stafford's injury persists and Wentz gets an opportunity, he aims to make a meaningful impact in Los Angeles.
