In a recent appearance on Stephen A. Smith's YouTube show, Tom Brady, who has been out of the NFL for less than a year, expressed his views on what he perceives as a decline in the quality of the league.
Brady claimed, "I think there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL. I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past."
The legendary quarterback went on to critique coaching standards, the development of young players, and how rule changes have impacted the game negatively. According to Brady, the rules have allowed bad habits to infiltrate the performance of the game, leading to what he considers a subpar product compared to earlier years.

Brady reminisced about the era of hard hits by NFL greats and expressed his dissatisfaction with today's stricter rules on violent tackles, suggesting that coaches should focus on teaching players to protect themselves rather than toning down the physicality of the game.
Interestingly, Brady acknowledged his own strategic adjustments in the past to protect his receivers from potential injuries after devastating hits. Despite criticizing the current state of the NFL as "soft," he noted that the safety measures in place today allow quarterbacks to make throws without the fear of game-ending hits.

However, the former quarterback may have overlooked the benefits he enjoyed in his later years, particularly with roughing the passer calls. Even non-violent contact triggered penalties that protected him and likely contributed to extending his career to the remarkable age of 45.
As Brady voices his concerns about the perceived decline in the NFL's standards, it remains to be seen how the league and its fans will respond to the critiques from one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the sport.
