The upcoming 2024 Olympic basketball tournament in Paris is already making headlines, with one of the most controversial stories involving Joel Embiid.
The Philadelphia 76ers star, originally from Cameroon, had been considering playing for France due to his fluency in French and some family connections. However, he eventually chose to represent Team USA.
While some in France were disappointed with Embiid's decision, former French Olympian Frederic Weis took his feelings to the extreme. Known for the infamous "Le dunk de la mort" from the 2000 Olympics, where Vince Carter dunked over him, Weis recently voiced strong opinions about Embiid on a French radio show.

Weis criticized Embiid for gaining French citizenship, calling it unfair and scandalous. He even suggested banning Embiid from entering France for the Olympics, saying, "You are Cameronian, you are American, you are not French, go away."
The controversy highlights the debate over FIBA's naturalization rules, which allow one naturalized player per team. Critics argue this gives Team USA an advantage, as many top basketball players reside in the U.S. and can easily become naturalized citizens.
Despite the uproar, Embiid's connection to the U.S. remains strong, having lived and played there for years. While the tension between Embiid and France adds spice to the upcoming Olympic tournament, it's unlikely to affect Team USA's chances of competing in Paris.
