Shane Bieber, star pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians, is facing another setback as he braces for elbow surgery, marking the second consecutive year he'll be sidelined for a significant period.

Bieber, known as a powerhouse on the mound, will undergo surgery to reconstruct his ulnar collateral ligament after experiencing persistent soreness following his Opening Day start in Oakland.

The Guardians, announcing Bieber's placement on the 15-day injured list retroactive to April 3, are working with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas to schedule the procedure.

This news comes as a blow to both Bieber and the team, with Guardians president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti, expressing empathy for the pitcher's situation.

Bieber's dominance in his first two outings of the season, amassing 20 strikeouts over 12 innings, masked any signs of discomfort. However, subsequent tests revealed the recurrence of the same ligament injury he dealt with last year, necessitating surgery.

With Bieber out of the rotation, questions arise about who will fill his spot. The Guardians are exploring options, including Ben Lively and Xzavion Curry, who are progressing through rehab assignments but are not yet fully stretched out as starters.

For Bieber, this injury poses uncertainties about his future, especially considering he is in the final year of his contract with the Guardians. The possibility of remaining in Cleveland beyond 2024 or attracting interest from other teams post-surgery remains unclear, leaving Bieber in a wait-and-see situation regarding his career trajectory.
