Ashley Moyer-Gleich got a big surprise in her email before leaving for a game last Saturday. Instead of wrapping up her season, she found out she had more games ahead.
The NBA picked Moyer-Gleich to be a referee for the playoffs, making her only the second woman ever chosen for this role. She joins Violet Palmer, who refereed nine playoff games from 2006 to 2012.
"It's surreal," said Moyer-Gleich about the news. She played basketball at Millersville University and became an NBA referee full-time in 2018. She has worked over 200 regular-season games in six seasons.

Moyer-Gleich was one of three new referees picked for the playoffs this year. She was aiming to be an alternate again after working four games last year. "To see my name on the list of working floor officials... it was really quite amazing," she shared.
The NBA announced a total of 36 referees for the first round of the playoffs. These referees were praised by NBA president Byron Spruell for their professionalism and dedication.
As the playoffs progress, the number of referees will be reduced, with 12 making it to the NBA Finals. These referees get special white jackets, a tradition the league has had for years.
Moyer-Gleich is excited about the possibility of wearing that white jacket someday. "The white jacket is even more super-coveted," she said. "Hopefully, I can continue to increase my responsibility on the floor and reach the finals."
