An Arizona woman who previously accused former MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer of sexual assault has been charged with defrauding him.

The indictment revealed on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court accuses the woman of fraud and theft by extortion. It suggests that Bauer and another person were targeted in a scheme that may have lasted several years.

The Associated Press typically doesn't name individuals who claim to be sexual assault victims unless they go public. The woman filed a lawsuit against Bauer in December 2022, alleging rape in late 2020 that resulted in a pregnancy.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was no listed attorney for the woman in the fraud case. The lawyer representing her in the assault lawsuit didn't respond immediately to a request for comment.

Bauer was never arrested or charged with a crime. He filed a countersuit, stating that he had a consensual encounter with the woman in 2020 and accused her of falsely claiming pregnancy to extort money. His legal team claimed she demanded millions from him.

Bauer paid $8,761 for what he believed were related pregnancy and termination expenses. However, the woman later revealed she hadn't terminated the pregnancy but suffered a miscarriage.

The woman is set to be arraigned on the charges next Friday. Bauer released a video statement on Tuesday, asserting his innocence and expressing frustration over the situation.

Bauer has been working to restart his MLB career after a suspension for violating the league’s policies on domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Following his release from the Los Angeles Dodgers in January 2023, he played for Japan’s Yokohama DeNA BayStars last year. He recently signed with Mexico’s Diablos Rojos and made his debut against the New York Yankees in a spring exhibition game.
