Gabby Williams Returns To WNBA, Joins Seattle Storm

Gabby Williams, a key player for the French basketball team during their silver medal run at the Paris Olympics, is returning to the WNBA.

She will rejoin the Seattle Storm, the team she played for in 2022 and 2023, for the rest of the season as they fight for a playoff spot.

Williams didn’t start the 2024 WNBA season because she chose to stay with the French national team to prepare for the Olympics. This made her one of the main players affected by the WNBA’s "prioritization clause," which suspends players who miss training camp. Many WNBA players play overseas during the offseason to earn more money, and those games often overlap with the WNBA season.

However, since Williams was a free agent and her season in France ended before the WNBA season started, she was still able to sign with a team. The Seattle Storm, currently fifth in the WNBA standings, saw this as a chance to strengthen their team and quickly signed her before the trade deadline.

Angel Reese, a rookie with the Chicago Sky, tried to convince Williams to join her team instead, but Williams hinted that she preferred to play somewhere else. Despite this, Williams has praised the WNBA as the best league in the world for women’s basketball, even though it doesn’t pay as well as some overseas leagues.

With her season in France over, Williams is now back in the WNBA and ready to help the Storm in their push for the playoffs.
