Piers Morgan Deletes Tweet After Mistake About Olympic Gold Medalist Imane Khelif

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won an Olympic gold medal in Paris, despite controversy surrounding her participation. However, Piers Morgan tweeted about the situation and got his facts wrong, leading him to delete the tweet.

Khelif, 25, has been in the spotlight because of a gender eligibility debate at the Paris Olympics. Despite the noise, she won a unanimous decision against China’s Liu Yang to secure the gold. The crowd at Roland Garros cheered her on, chanting her name as she dominated the three-round bout.

Piers Morgan quickly posted on social media, claiming a "biological male" won the competition. However, he was mistaken. Morgan confused Liu Yang with Lin Yu-ting, another boxer involved in the gender debate. Lin, who fights in a different weight class, competes for gold on Saturday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed both Khelif and Lin to compete, despite being banned by the International Boxing Association (IBA) in 2023 over gender eligibility concerns. The IBA failed to provide solid evidence against them.

Khelif has always competed as a woman, starting her international career in 2017. After her win, she said, "I am fully qualified. I am a woman like any other woman."

Olympic chief Thomas Bach defended Khelif and Lin, saying they have the right to participate as women and dismissing the idea that gender is solely determined by chromosomes.

Khelif brushed off the controversy, focusing on her performance and dedication to her supporters in Algeria.
