Elon Musk deleted a post on Monday that questioned why former President Donald Trump had faced two assassination attempts, while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hadn’t. Musk later said the post was meant as a joke.

In the deleted post, Musk wrote, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala 🤔.” Musk initially resisted taking the post down but eventually did after being told it could be misunderstood.

Musk responded, saying he didn’t want to encourage violence, even in jest. He later repeated that the post was a joke.

The White House called Musk’s comments “irresponsible” and said violence should never be joked about or encouraged. The Secret Service, responsible for protecting the president and vice president, said they were aware of the post but did not comment further.

Musk has been leaning more toward the right politically in recent years and often speaks out against progressive views. He has also posted about conspiracy theories and controversial topics, pushing the limits of the rules on the platform X, which he owns.
