Polish Border Guard Major Jacek Michałowski has clarified why Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was handcuffed at Kraków Airport. He said it was not a detention, but a safety measure. The handcuffs were removed soon after.

According to Michałowski, Usyk and another man missed their flight because they did not go to the gate when called by security. When border guards arrived, the men were upset and gesturing a lot, so handcuffs were used briefly for safety.

Once they were taken to the office, the handcuffs were removed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Usyk was later released.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the actions of the Polish law enforcement, calling them "unacceptable," and said they would address the matter with Poland.

Usyk's team also said the incident was caused by issues with customs control at the airport.
