Pope Francis said on Friday that US voters face a tough choice in the presidential election, describing it as picking the "lesser of two evils." He criticized former President Donald Trump’s stance on immigration and Vice President Kamala Harris’s support for abortion rights, saying both are “against life.”
Speaking from the papal plane, Francis urged voters to reflect on their choices. He said, “Who is the lesser of two evils? I don’t know. Everyone with a conscience should think on this and decide.”
Francis has been outspoken on political issues, highlighting both immigration and abortion as important. He has condemned harsh immigration policies and emphasized the value of every human life, from the unborn to migrants. “To send away a child from the womb or to turn away migrants is a serious wrong,” he said.

The Pope has also taken progressive stances, such as allowing priests to forgive abortions and blessing same-sex couples. He has previously criticized Trump’s plans to build a border wall and urged US bishops to focus on pastoral care rather than political issues.
US Catholics have mixed views, with 52% leaning Republican and 44% leaning Democrat, according to Pew Research. In the 2020 election, Catholic voters were almost evenly split between Biden and Trump, but 61% believe abortion should be legal in most cases.
