Selena Gomez isn’t staying quiet when it comes to people judging her for not being able to have children. The 32-year-old actress and singer spoke out during a Women in Film dinner, where she attended with her younger sister, Gracie, age 11.

In a video shared on social media, Gomez said, “Yes, I’ve shared that I can’t carry a child. Yes, I’ve shared that I have bipolar. And you know what? Back off! That’s my life. That’s who I am.”

She went on to encourage others, saying, “Don’t let anyone tell you you’re a victim. You’re a survivor.” Gomez said she’s not ashamed to talk about her struggles and believes there’s strength in being open about needing help.

Earlier this month, Gomez revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that her health issues prevent her from carrying her own children. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2015 and had a kidney transplant in 2017. She said it took her some time to accept that her journey to becoming a mom might look different.

While she can’t carry a child, Gomez is hopeful about becoming a mother through surrogacy or adoption. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like. It’ll be my baby, no matter what,” she shared.
