Indian Business Leader Ratan Tata Dies at 86

Ratan Tata, one of India's most respected business leaders, has died at the age of 86. The Tata Group, the company he led for over 20 years, shared the news of his passing.

Tata was known worldwide for transforming the Tata Group into a global giant. The company has annual revenues of over $100 billion and owns famous brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, and Tetley Tea.

Current Tata Group chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, called Tata a "truly uncommon leader" and said his legacy will continue to inspire the company.

Ratan Tata took over as chairman of the Tata Group in 1991. He made several big business moves, including buying steelmaker Corus and UK car companies Jaguar and Land Rover. He retired in 2012 but remained a guiding figure in the company as chairman emeritus.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Tata as a "visionary leader" and said he was "extremely pained" by his passing.

Born in 1937, Tata studied in the US and joined the Tata Group in 1962. Throughout his career, he was known for his love of fast cars, planes, and dogs. He was also awarded one of India's highest honors, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.

Ratan Tata’s life will be remembered for his contributions to Indian business and his simple, humble lifestyle.
