A top U.S. State Department official told CNN that Israel has not assured the U.S. that it won’t target Iran’s nuclear sites in response to missile attacks from Iran earlier this week.

The official said it’s hard to know if Israel will use the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attacks to strike back.

The U.S. hopes Israel will act wisely, but there are no promises, the official said. While the U.S. supports Israel after the missile attacks, it’s also worried about the conflict spreading in the Middle East.

President Joe Biden said the U.S. would not support Israel attacking Iran’s nuclear program. He suggested Israel should consider other options.

It’s still unclear when Israel will decide on its next move. U.S. officials are in constant contact with Israel, working to keep the situation from escalating into a larger war.
