The movie "Joker: Folie à Deux" was expected to finally show the true, chaotic origin of Harley Quinn, one of DC’s most famous characters. But once again, her full story was left out. Harley’s complex past, which involves her falling for the Joker while treating him as his psychiatrist, wasn’t fully explored in the film. This has disappointed many fans.
The character Harley Quinn was first created for the 1990s "Batman: The Animated Series." She became popular because of her twisted relationship with the Joker, where both characters influence each other’s madness. Harley is not just a victim but is also deeply involved in the Joker’s crimes. Yet, this key part of her character has never been properly shown in live-action movies.
In "Joker: Folie à Deux," Lady Gaga plays Harley, but her version is a patient in the same mental institution as Arthur Fleck, the Joker. This version of Harley doesn’t explore the psychological manipulation that made her the Harley Quinn from the comics and animated series. Many of the scenes fans were excited to see, such as Harley kissing another woman, were even cut from the final movie.

Margot Robbie’s version of Harley in movies like "Suicide Squad" and "Birds of Prey" has been the most popular live-action portrayal so far. But even in those films, Harley’s full backstory is only briefly mentioned.
Some believe filmmakers are hesitant to show the darker side of Harley’s relationship with the Joker, where she is both manipulated by and complicit in his crimes. The complexity of their relationship might be seen as too controversial. As a result, Harley's origin story remains watered down in live-action films.
For now, it seems Harley Quinn’s real story, which is both twisted and empowering, is still waiting to be fully told on the big screen.
