Adam Sandler Is 2023's Highest-Paid Actor, Earning $73 Million Without a Hit Film

Adam Sandler, who many know from his funny movies in the 90s and early 2000s, is the world’s highest-paid actor of 2023. Despite not having a big box-office hit in five years, he earned an impressive $73 million last year, according to Forbes. This put him above stars like Tom Cruise, Shah Rukh Khan, and Margot Robbie.

Sandler’s income came mostly from his Netflix releases. He starred in three movies—Murder Mystery 2, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, and Leo, where he voiced the main character. He also produced The Out-Laws starring Adam Devine. As a producer, Sandler got a big share of the revenue from digital sales, which helped him reach his huge earnings.

Interestingly, Sandler’s movies have gone straight to streaming on Netflix for the past few years, like Hustle (2022) and Hubie Halloween (2021). His last big box-office success was Uncut Gems in 2019, which made $50 million. His only recent theater release, Spaceman (2024), didn’t do as well.

Margot Robbie was the second-highest earner, making $59 million thanks to the massive success of Barbie. Her co-star, Ryan Gosling, along with Tom Cruise and Matt Damon, were also among the top five, each earning over $40 million. However, no Indian actor made the top 10 list, although Shah Rukh Khan earned over $30 million from three hit movies: Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki.

Adam Sandler's spot at the top of the list shows that actors can still be the highest earners even if they don’t have recent box-office hits, as long as they have strong deals with streaming services. Source
