Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won gold at the Paris Olympics in women’s boxing, is at the center of a heated debate after a leaked medical report raised questions about her eligibility for female sports competitions.
A French journalist, Djaffar Ait Aoudia, shared a report that suggested Khelif has a condition affecting her sexual development. This condition, known as 5-alpha reductase deficiency, can lead to ambiguous genitalia and internal male characteristics, though it typically limits other male traits.
The report, prepared by doctors in Paris and Algiers in June 2023, stated that Khelif has an XY chromosome makeup and internal testicles, but no uterus. It recommended surgery and hormone treatments to help her align more closely with her gender identity.

Khelif’s eligibility for women’s sports has been questioned before. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) barred her from a world championship match in New Delhi due to similar concerns. This sparked a major debate over gender classifications in sports, with high-profile figures, including Piers Morgan and former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for stricter guidelines on who can compete in women’s events.
Despite the controversy, Khelif stands by her identity, saying, “I was born as a woman, I live as a woman, and I am qualified.” Source: The Indian Express
