Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers of all time, recently admitted he might not reach his goal of scoring 1,000 career goals before retiring. The Portuguese superstar, who turns 40 in February, has been eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone for years. He recently became the first male player to score 900 goals for both club and country, after scoring in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia.
Since then, Ronaldo has added eight more goals, bringing him even closer to the record. However, speaking after receiving the Platinum Quinas trophy from the Portuguese Football Federation, Ronaldo hinted that he might not hit the 1,000 mark. “I live in the moment now,” he said. “I can't think long term anymore. I wanted to reach 1,000 goals, but now it's about seeing how my legs respond in the next few years. If I reach it, great, but if not, I’m already the player with the most goals in history.”
At 39, Ronaldo has rarely discussed retirement, often focusing on making more history. He has even said he hopes to play in the 2026 World Cup, which would make him the first player to appear in six tournaments. But his recent comments suggest he may be thinking about the end of his career for the first time.

Alongside this hint at retirement, Ronaldo received the Platinum Quinas trophy, the top honor for Portuguese players. With 133 international goals, Ronaldo is the leading scorer in international football history. He was awarded by the Portuguese Prime Minister and the FPF President. “It’s an honor to receive this trophy. My journey has been filled with hard work,” he said. He recalled his dream to reach 100 international caps when he was just 18 and how his goals kept growing from there.
