Jon Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, has been named one of the 10 greatest athletes of all time by an AI-generated list. The list, which included legendary figures like Lionel Messi, Muhammad Ali, and Michael Jordan, placed Jones at number seven.
Jones defended his belt at UFC 309 last Saturday, knocking out Stipe Miocic in the third round. He is already considered by many as the best MMA fighter ever, having dominated the light heavyweight division for over a decade before moving up to heavyweight.
The AI list, titled “Top 10 Greatest Athletes,” was topped by basketball icon Michael Jordan, followed by Muhammad Ali, Pele, Usain Bolt, and Lionel Messi. Others included Wayne Gretzky, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, and LeBron James.

Reacting to the recognition, Jones said, “Just the thought of being mentioned alongside these great athletes makes me happy. AI generated or not.”
Rankings Debate
Jones has been a hot topic in the rankings discussion in 2024. Despite his recent victory, he has fought only once in the last four years and dropped in the pound-for-pound (P4P) rankings, which are decided by MMA reporters. However, his win over Miocic moved him to the #2 spot, behind Islam Makhachev and ahead of Alex Pereira.

UFC President Dana White has been vocal about his belief that Jones should be ranked as the P4P best. White has even called for an AI-based ranking system, suggesting it would be more accurate than the current panel of reporters.
On Instagram, White tagged Mark Zuckerberg, saying, “I have to get rid of these CLOWNS! @Zuck let’s get this AI deal done ASAP!!!!!”
While the idea of AI-powered UFC rankings is still up in the air, fans are left wondering if Jon Jones would finally claim the top spot in such a system. Source
