The Dispute That Led To Islam Makhachev’s Only Loss

Islam Makhachev’s sole career defeat came at UFC 192 against Adriano Martins, and a disagreement in his camp may have played a big role in that loss.
In the lead-up to the fight, Makhachev was focused on improving his striking skills. His progress impressed coach Javier Mendez, who believed Islam should rely on his fists during the bout. But Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the late father of Khabib Nurmagomedov, strongly disagreed.
Abdulmanap wanted Makhachev to avoid striking exchanges, especially in the first round, fearing Martins’ knockout power. Despite his concerns, Mendez and Makhachev pushed forward with their striking-focused game plan.

Speaking about the fight during an event in Russia, Abdulmanap expressed his regret:
“In my work, my biggest regret is agreeing to Javier Mendez’s plan for Islam to exchange punches. I told Islam, ‘Give me the first round at least. Don’t exchange; he’s very dangerous early.’ But they convinced me, and Islam was dropped. That’s why I tell Islam, ‘Don’t listen to me if you want to get knocked out again.’”
The loss was a turning point for Makhachev, who went on to learn from the mistake and dominate the UFC lightweight division. He is now considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
As champion, Makhachev constantly faces challengers eager to take his belt. Among them is Paddy Pimblett, who believes he could defeat the Dagestani fighter.
The confident Liverpudlian said he would welcome the chance to face Makhachev, claiming the lightweight king “wouldn’t stand a chance” against him.
Time will tell if Pimblett gets the opportunity to test his skills against the reigning champion. Source
