Mike Tyson’s Glove-Biting During Jake Paul Fight Explained By Ex-Coach

Mike Tyson’s recent fight against Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium on November 15 sparked curiosity when fans noticed the boxing legend biting his gloves during the match.

The 58-year-old Tyson, fighting for the first time in two decades, went all eight rounds but lost by unanimous decision to Paul, who is 31 years younger. The event drew an incredible 60 million Netflix viewers, many of whom were puzzled by Tyson’s unusual habit in the ring.

After the fight, Tyson was asked if the glove-biting was due to an issue with his mouthguard. He dismissed this, saying, “I have a habit of biting my glove… I have a biting fixation.”

This brought back memories of Tyson’s infamous 1997 fight with Evander Holyfield, where he bit a piece of Holyfield’s ear. Jake Paul even leaned into the joke, wearing a $200,000 diamond ear protector during a press event.

Teddy Atlas, who trained Tyson during his teenage years, offered a different explanation. He suggested the glove-biting was a calculated move to maintain Tyson’s image as an unpredictable, fearsome fighter.

“Tyson knows the importance of keeping that scary image,” Atlas said. “People still see him as ‘the baddest man on the planet.’ Saying he bit his gloves to stop himself from biting Paul’s ear is brilliant for his brand.”

Atlas also noted that the behavior likely stemmed from Tyson’s nerves. “Even legends feel doubt and unease. Biting the glove might have been his way of calming himself, like a pacifier.”

Despite the loss, Tyson seemed content with his performance. He revealed on social media that he had overcome major health challenges, including losing half his blood and enduring eight transfusions in June, to prepare for the fight.

“This is one of those moments where you lose but still win,” Tyson wrote. “Fighting eight rounds with someone half my age in a packed stadium is something I’m proud of.”

Tyson hinted this might be his last fight, though he did briefly call out Jake’s brother, Logan Paul. For now, fans are left wondering if “Iron Mike” will step into the ring again. Source
